After an extremely successful 2018 Emmy Awards, winning outstanding drama series and outstanding supporting actor in a drama series along with seven Creative Arts Emmys, Game of Thrones continues its reign, receiving more Emmy's than any other scripted series.
Originating from the George R R Martin Novel Series ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’, in 2007 HBO Productions purchased the rights to the collection and began airing the fantasy adaptation on their US cable channel. The show premiered on 17th April 2011, on HBO and its Eighth and final season will premiere in 2019.
In its entirety, Game of Thrones has won over 291 awards, including Golden Globes, BAFTA’s and MTV Movie and TV awards, and has received 485 nominations. It is watched by over 12.1 million viewers worldwide which surpasses totals for other popular shows such as The Walking Dead and American Horror Story.
In 2019 HBO plans to open its filming locations in Northern Ireland, that are home to Winterfell, Castle Black and King’s Landing, to the public as tourist attractions, which is sure to keep the fantasy alive!
Game of Thrones was highly anticipated by fans before its premiere in 2011, and has become a critical and commercial success. According to The Guardian, by 2014 it was "the biggest drama" and "the most talked about show" on television and in 2012 Vulture.com ranked the series’ fan’s as the most devoted in popular culture.
The characters dominate cosplay events and Comic Cons, where fans flock to meet the actors behind their favourite characters and nothing pleases a Game of Thrones fan more than discussing conspiracy theories on who will finally claim the Iron Throne.
Not content with discussing their favourite characters, the fans decided to take it one step further. Names such as Khaleesi, Arya, Tyrion, Brienne, Sansa, Bran, Sandor, and Theon have gained high levels of popularity since the beginning of the show!
It takes over lives and never lets go! The fact that the fans haven’t gone stir crazy throughout this hiatus is completely baffling, however we assume they have filled their time with drinking copious amounts of wine and watching the previous 7 seasons on loop.
It is a sad thought that after the next season, Dragons and Whitewalkers will all seem like a distant dream but fear not because we have something to chase your Westeros blues away!
